Americans for Gun Safety (AGS) is bringing a new, centrist perspective to a long-polarized debate.
AGS supports the right of individuals to own guns and seeks better new laws and tougher enforcement of existing laws to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and children.
AGS believes that with gun rights, come gun responsibilities, and that means responsible gun ownership, responsible gun use, and responsible gun laws.
With 300,000 gun-related crimes and 10,000 gun-related homicides occurring every year, there is more we can do to lock up criminals who use guns, effectively enforce the existing gun laws, and close the loopholes in those laws that make it all too easy for criminals and children to get guns in the first place.
AGS is still relatively new - Andrew McKelvey, CEO of TMP Worldwide, founded the group in July 2000. But AGS and its fresh approach to the gun debate already have produced results.
In 2000, AGS invested $3 million in Colorado and Oregon to pass historic ballot measures requiring background checks for all gun show sales.
Voters, including a majority of gun owners, overwhelmingly approved the initiatives. Those and other successes are why The Washington Post has labeled AGS the dominant force for gun safety.
AGS is a project of the Tsunami Fund, a not-for-profit 501(c)(4) organization.
